On 6 September 2016 the UN General Assembly held an Informal Interactive Dialogue on the Responsibility to Protect (R2P). The Interactive Dialogue addressed the UN Secretary-General’s eighth annual report on R2P, entitled “Mobilizing Collective Action: The Next Decade of the Responsibility to Protect.”
Following presentations by the President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Mogens Lykketoft (Norway), and UN Deputy Secretary-General, Mr. Jan Eliasson, a panel of experts delivered remarks on the Secretary-General’s report. The introductory panel included the UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Mr. Adama Dieng, and two former Special Advisers on the Responsibility to Protect, Dr. Edward Luck and Dr. Jennifer Welsh. The interactive dialogue was moderated by Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, Mr. Ivan Simonovic, who the Secretary-General has appointed as his new Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect starting in October 2016. Interventions were then delivered by member states and civil society organizations.
