On 9 October the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) adopted Resolution 57/2, which renews the mandate of the Independent International Fact-finding Mission (FFM) for Sudan for a period of one year. The resolution expresses deep concern at the statement by the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide on 10 September 2024 that all the risks and indicators of the crime of genocide are present in the Sudan, and that serious allegations have been made that this crime has already been committed. Through the resolution the Council urges the UN, together with the African Union, to accelerate consideration of practical options for enhancing the protection of civilians in the Sudan, in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders and in full recognition of the obligation of the Sudan to act in accordance with International Humanitarian Law and to protect its population from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity. The resolution was adopted by a recorded vote of 23 in favor, 12 against and 12 abstentions.
