On 19 December 2019 the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2502 on the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Resolution 2502 extends the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in DRC (MONUSCO) until 20 December 2020 and decides to increase the troop ceiling to be comprised of 14,000 military personnel, 660 military observers and staff officers, 591 police personnel, and 1,050 personnel of formed police units, and a temporary deployment of an additional 360 personnel of formed police units provided they are deployed in replacement of military personnel. The resolution also recalls that the government of the DRC bears the primary responsibility to protect civilians within its territory and subject to its jurisdiction, including protection from crimes against humanity and war crimes.
