On 29 March the UN Security Council passed Resolution 2459 on the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Resolution 2459 extends the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in DRC (MONUSCO) until 20 December 2019 and decides to lower the troop ceiling to be comprised of 16,215 military personnel, 660 military observers and staff officers, 391 police personnel and 1,050 personnel of formed police units. The resolution also recalls that the government of the DRC bears the primary responsibility to protect civilians within its territory and subject to its jurisdiction, including protection from crimes against humanity and war crimes.
