On 27 March 2018 the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2409 on the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Resolution 2409 extends the mandate of the UN peacekeeping mission in DRC (MONUSCO) until 31 March 2019 and maintains the current troop ceiling. The resolution also sets out the Mission’s priorities, including the protection of civilians and monitoring the 31 December 2016 agreement on the country’s electoral process. Resolution 2409 also “recalls that the Government of the DRC bears the primary responsibility to protect civilians within its territory and subject to its jurisdiction, including protection from crimes against humanity and war crimes.”
