Amplifying the Voices of Affected Communities

Amplifying the Voices of Affected Communities

The Global Centre engages with civil society, human rights defenders and survivor and victim communities as critical partners in our collective advocacy. We work to ensure their voices and expertise are centered in and substantively inform policy discussions and decision-making processes within and among governments and in multilateral spaces regarding the response to emerging or protracted atrocity situations.

Too often the voices of those most impacted by atrocities are missing at negotiating tables and in critical multilateral fora. Throughout our advocacy on country situations, the Global Centre facilitates briefings and bilateral meetings with civil society from affected countries to mobilize international action in a manner that respects the needs and perspectives of these populations. These joint efforts have been instrumental in the establishment of several investigative mechanisms, supporting ongoing international efforts to secure justice and accountability and in relation to the implementation of an atrocity prevention lens, human rights protection and promotion and R2P.

By amplifying the experiences and expertise of local civil society and affected communities, the Global Centre helps facilitate knowledge sharing that is rights-based and community-informed to shape appropriate and effective preventive action. Bridging this gap also helps to elevate early warning, as civil society can raise awareness on emerging human rights violations and atrocity risks in countries in which they operate, as well as on ongoing and emerging crises that do not receive sufficient attention and resources from the international community.

The Global Centre leverages our role with existing intergovernmental (Global Network of R2P Focal Points and the Group of Friends of R2P) and interorganizational (ICR2P) networks to create platforms for discussion. Our podcast, Expert Voices on Atrocity Prevention and events provide platforms to amplify the voices of affected communities to our wider audience.
